Intro to Web/RCS

* What is Web/RCS?

It's a Web-based front-end to the RCS revision control system. At present Web/RCS supports the following functions:

* Getting Started (Login Instructions)

When you click on View RCS Tree you will be asked for a user name and password. Login in with your normal user ID and rcs as the password:

User ID: <Your Provista user ID>
Password: rcs

At present you don't have to use your real password. This may change once we make Web/RCS available over the "real" Internet.

One you've logged in, your ID stays with you for as long as your browser session remains open (that is, until you exit Netscape). You can't simply "log out" of the application. This is a limitation of the way authentication works under HTTP, so be careful.

* Browser Support

Web/RCS was developed and QA'd under Netscape Version 4. If you have problems running Web/RCS under Netscape (from either a Unix or Windows client), please let me know ASAP.

If you are using an earlier version of Netscape, you may have trouble uploading a file through your browser, since this functionality is a recent addition to the HTTP protocol. Apart from that everything else should work.

It also seems to work OK under MSIE 4.0, but there are differences in the way MSIE handles certain "standard" HTTP headers, so it's not a simple matter to QA for both platforms.

In particular, it's a pain to download files becuase MSIE insists on trying to run a "handler" application based on the file type (e.g. run Excel if you download a .xls file), or complain if you haven't taken the time to properly set up your security preferences.

However please report all problems to me anyway so I can keep track. Thanks.
